Perineal massage is a simple and effective technique to help prepare your body for labour and reduce the risk of perineal tearing during childbirth. Starting around 34-36 weeks of pregnancy, this massage targets the perineum, the area between the vagina and anus, which stretches significantly to allow the baby’s head to pass through during delivery.
Some very high quality research has shown that women who practise perineal massage have a 64% reduction in the risk of severe (grade 3 and 4) perineal tears, which can cause long-term complications. Perineal massage can also lower the likelihood of needing an episiotomy (a surgical incision) by 21% and may help reduce the duration of the pushing stage during labour.
By gently massaging and stretching this area, the perineum becomes more flexible, making it easier for the tissues to stretch during childbirth. However, perineal massage goes far beyond the tissue benefits! Perineal massage helps you practise pelvic floor relaxation techniques, allowing you to better prepare your mind for childbirth by teaching you how to use mindfulness and relaxation strategies when experiencing a stretching sensation.
The massage should never be painful. Ensure your hands are clean before starting and avoid massaging if you have any active infections. Some women choose to perform the massage themselves, using a mirror for guidance, while others prefer to have their partner assist. How often you perform perineal massage can depend on your individual tissues and goals. For optimal results, it’s beneficial to consult with a pelvic health physiotherapist to ensure you're using the correct technique and to determine the best frequency for your needs.
Before beginning perineal massage, it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider or physiotherapist to ensure it's safe for you. Incorporating perineal massage into your self-care routine can help you feel more confident and prepared for childbirth, leading to a smoother delivery and quicker recovery.
