Pelvic Floor

Women's Health Physiotherapy & Pilates, Torquay

Statistics tell us that 50% of women who have a vaginal birth will have a prolapse and 1 in 3 women will experience incontinence over the course of their lives. Considering these staggering findings and their implications, all women could find a pelvic floor consultation useful!

This is especially true after giving birth (either Vaginal or C-section) and at Menopause, as there are many changes to our pelvic floor tissues at these times, both physical and hormonal.

Pelvic floor consultations usually involve an internal examination for best assessment of pelvic floor function but this is not always necessary.

The pelvic floor, like any group of muscles can be trained for strength, co-ordination and endurance and exercise programs are often very individual depending on assessment findings.

We can assess and treat:

  • The correct activation and execution of pelvic floor exercises

  • Urinary incontinence (stress and urge)

  • Overactive bladder

  • Pelvic pain

  • Overactive pelvic floor requiring down training

  • Issues with sexual function

  • Bowel issues; constipation, faecal incontinence, rectal pain, fissures

  • Prolapse (including pessary management)

  • Obstetric injuries (3rd and 4th degree tears)

  • Pelvic floor issues post menopause

  • Those who struggle with sensation and getting a pelvic floor contraction

  • Bladder Pain (previously know as Interstitial Cystitis)

  • Coccyx pain

Many of our Physiotherapists have Post Graduate Certificates in Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy from the University of Melbourne and regularly do courses to stay up to date in this area. All of our Women's health physios have extensive post graduate training in pelvic floor physiotherapy and we have a strong internal mentoring program.

FAQ

Menstruation

Unless you have a day of particularly heavy flow, it is no problem for us to do a pelvic floor internal assessment whilst you are on your period, however, the most important thing for us is for you to feel comfortable so if you do need to re-schedule for this reason, please give us as much notice as possible.
